Prof M Z Khan

M. Z. Khan, M.S.W., Ph.D., started his professional career as Assistant Professor, Dept. of Criminology & Forensic Science, DHG University, Sagar (1962-78). He briefly served with the National Institute of Social Defence, Ministry of Welfare (now Social Justice & Empowerment), GOI, (1978-79) and as Professor of Criminology, National Institute of Criminology & Forensic Science, Ministry of Home Affairs, GOI, (1979-83), before joining Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, as Professor of Social Work (1983-2000); and he also served as Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences.

Dr. Khan is associated with several governmental, professional and voluntary organisations. He is past President of Indian Society of Criminology. During 1990-96, he was a member of the Academic Committee of the SVP National Police Academy, Hyderabad. Among other professional engagements, he is at present a member of the Chhattisgarh Jail Reforms Committee. He is a widely travelled professional and has visited several countries. In 1983, Dr. Khan was awarded the prestigious Kumarappa-Reckless Award by the Indian Society of Criminology. In 1991, Calcutta University conferred on him a medal for his studies on drug dependence. .

Professor Khan has mentored a large number of Ph.D. students, conducted many studies and successfully implemented several research projects sponsored by national and international agencies. Apart from news-paper articles, Dr. Khan has contributed nearly 100 papers in scientific journals published from India and abroad. Besides, he has authored to-date fourteen books, including Dacoity in Chambal Valle (New Delhi: Inter-India Publications, 1981), Attitude of Adolescents towards Police (Delhi: NICFS¸1982), Delay in the Disposal of Criminal Cases in Courts (Delhi: NICFS, 1982), Drug use amongst the college youth (Bombay: Somaiya Publishing House, 1985), Work by Jail Inmates (New Delhi: Inter-India, 1989) and Open-air Jails in India (New Delhi: BPR & D, 2007).
